Being an engineering student ain’t easy, or at least that’s what I’ve heard. But engineering students arguably have the coolest competitions, like the Formula Student race that pits engineering students from across Europe in a contest of handling speed. While normally dominated by gas-powered karts, this year electric cars took both first and second place, perhaps signifying a paradigm shift in this collegiate motorsport.

Audi R18 E-Tron Wins 24 Hours of Le Mans

after 24 hours of big crashes and some brutal racing, the winner was indeed an Audi hybrid, with the car piloted by the team of Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler, and Treluyer Benoit taking the checkered flag. Indeed, the German brand swept the podium, with the second R18 e-tron hybrid taking second place and an Audi R18 Ultra coming in third. But what of the other hybrid/experimental racers?

West Philly High School Builds 160 MPG Supercar, Win Green Grand Prix

A group of high school students, using a kit car body designed for high performance, managed to win the Green Grand Prix rally back in April by getting 160 mpg using an old VW engine running on biodiesel and a home-built hybrid system.
