Imagine a sunny day in Portugal. Three of the world’s best supercars are on hand at the Portomao racing circuit to find out which one is best. No holds barred. No fudge factors. No excuses. Just head to head to head competition designed to separate the wheat from the chaff and declare a winner.
You can thank Chris Harris On Cars for pulling this off. Top Gear tried for years to do a comparison test between the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and Ferraris’ extra-special LaFerrari but could never bring all the pieces together at the same time in the same place. It wasn’t all smiles and sunshine for Harris either. Ultimately, it came down to tires.
The McLaren is delivered with two sets of tires — one for the track and another for street use. The LaFerrari comes with street rubber. Ferrari didn’t want their LaFerrari supercar to be at a disadvantage to the other two hybrids. McLaren wanted its car to run with track tires installed. Pirelli finally stepped in to resolve the matter by providing equivalent P Zero Corsa high performance tires for all three cars.
After that was settled, Harris along with Marino Franchitti and Fifth Gear presenter Tiff Needell, took to the track, piling on lap after lap while they shared their driving impressions on camera. They pushed each one to its limits, rating it for acceleration (ferocious) cornering grip (insane) and braking (stunning). At the end of the day, they put their heads together and came up with a winner.
Want to know more? You will have to watch the video — all 53 minutes of it. I know, I know. Forcing car nuts and gearheads to watch almost an hour of million dollar cars frolicking around this undulating race course with no commercials is a heavy burden to place on your shoulders, but someone has got to do it. Why not you?
