Project Spotlight: Dirigo, the Homemade 99 MPG Car

Bill Buchholz has built one of the most unique looking experimental diesel powered cars on the road. A one-time contender for the $10 million dollar Automotive X Prize, Dirigo is made of fiberglass and wood, Western Red Cider to be exact, and has gotten up to 99 miles per gallon (mpg); 89 mpg and 92 mpg recorded in events and competitions throughout the United States.

The Annual One Gallon Challenge Draws Unique Cars for 111 Mile "Race"

As much as we like to talk about a future without oil, the fact of the matter is that one gallon of oil-derived gasoline holds a tremendous amount of energy. Just how much energy does a gallon of gas go? That’s what drivers of the annual One Gallon Challenge, a part of the Boston Greenfest, set off to find out yesterday as they attempted the 111 mile drive from Plymouth, MA to Boston on just a single gallon of gas.
