If you’re anything like me, you’ve been thoroughly enjoying the post-race infographics that have been popping up on the Formula 1 subreddit throughout the 2018 season. If you’re smarter than me, though, you would have realized that these poster-quality images weren’t, in fact, officially-produced F1 race summaries meant for mass redistribution. You’d know that they were the work of a single, dedicated F1 fan. If you didn’t know, well: meet Ivan.
I reached out to Ivan a few weeks ago, and found him to be a genuinely engaging graphic artist from Slovakia with- like many of us- a somewhat inexplicable fascination with F1. I asked him some question, and was lucky enough to get his very honest, open replies. I’ve decided to share those with you here, below.
What’s your name? Or, I guess, do you prefer being known online by some kind of username? Where are you located?
My name is Ivan, and I’m from Slovakia.
I’m self-taught and I started out as a hobbyist, doing fanart from TV shows I watched and stuff like that. About three years ago a series of events landed me a job as a junior graphic designer at an ad agency and I’ve been doing it professionally ever since.
F1 has always been part of Sunday afternoons for as long as I can remember. Mostly because my dad is a lifelong fan, so I’ve always been aware of it and seen the odd race here and there. I only really started taking it seriously in 2016. I’m not sure what got me hooked, though. I just suddenly got really into it.
I have always liked Ferrari, even as a kid when I didn’t really pay much attention. So I’m kind of stuck liking Vettel. Not that there’s anything wrong with him– he’s a great driver and he’s not an ass most of the time. But, I feel like I have to like him because he’s getting wins for Ferrari. I also really enjoy Kimi for his personality and all the memes surrounding him– but, sadly, I missed his glory days. It’s frustrating to see how Ferrari has him playing second fiddle to Vettel. I also enjoy Ricciardo’s overtakes and I’m always happy to see him on the podium. I’d love for Alonso to get back in the game with a better car, too.
Do you follow other types of racing? You’re making these infographics for Formula 1, obviously, but do you make stuff like this for other sports?
This is probably not the right answer for this blog, but I’m not a petrolhead at all! I love F1, but I have very little interest in cars in general or in other motorsports. I’ve been working on some graphics involving Le Mans for one eShop, though.
What do you get out of creating these? Is it just for the upvotes or are you hoping for something more?
Upvotes are flattering, of course, but I try to avoid that whole instant gratification aspect of social media, so I don’t pay much attention to how many likes I get. Praise in comments is always nice, though, and I’m glad people like my work. I do the infographics because it’s the type of content I wanted to see but it didn’t exist. I get all my information, except the position changes, from F1.com. So they have it all there. But, you have to search for it. It’s scattered across three or four pages so there’s no fast and simple way of getting a race recap. Liberty is doing a great job on YouTube with their video content, but a simple thing like an infographic is missing. Making them also takes me back to my days doing fan art that others like me could enjoy. At work, I often do the type of stuff ad blockers were made for, so it’s often not stuff I can enjoy and be proud of. Ads in general aren’t very useful, but these infographics might be.
I don’t know how you guys feel about Ivan, but he seems like a genuinely good dude and enthusiastic Formula 1 fan, to me. Beyond that, I absolutely love the work he’s been doing with the infographic after every race, and I hope he starts to get the recognition he deserves.
What do you guys thing? Is Ivan exactly the guy that Liberty Media needs to generate Formula 1 infographics on an official level? Let us know if you’d like to see that happen in the comments section at the bottom of the page– maybe they’ll pay attention to us and make it happen! In the meantime, check out some of Ivan’s other projects, below. Enjoy!
