Crossing the Indian Subcontinent by Rickshaw (w/ Video)
The Rickshaw Run is a 3,500 kilometer pan-Indian adventure tour/race in a 7 HP rickshaw. It is, according to the event organizers, “the least sensible thing to do with two weeks.” As events go, I can’t think of one that’s less sensible … or more glorious.
Longtime readers of this blog probably know that my love of Vespa’s Ape mini truck- loving called a “Tuk Tuk” throughout Asia- knows no bounds. Even without the screwball addition of a Cannonball-style dash and the treacherous nature of a tropical monsoon season factored in, then, a Rickshaw Run across the Indian subcontinent would have me sold. This, however, has the makings of a real adventure. This is more adventure-y than Everest or Kilimanjaro then, surely, now that thousands of people have accomplished those feats with little more bravery and mountaineering required than that which goes into writing a fat check.
You want to really live? Ride through a monsoon on a glorified lawnmower and let me know how you feel afterwards. It probably feels a bit like riding a Honda CX500 into a microburst, but I can only hope I eventually get to compare the two. And I may get the chance!
The Adventurists have been holding Rickshaw Runs every year for the last ten (10!) freakin’ years! It’s an amazing challenge- and it has to be one of the most incredibly fun, balls-out things human beings are still allowed to do in 2017. The stats say it all: 1900 breakdowns, 90-odd hospitalizations, and nothing but smiles on the faces of the people in the videos.
I am definitely doing a Rickshaw Run
I’m not doing it yet, though. Kids, wife, lack of Indian Rickshaw Run sponsorship, and an insufficient hoard of Nazi gold mean this is something I’ll have to save up for. Until then, however, I’ll watch the dozens of available videos, check out the photo galleries, and count my pennies. You can check it out for yourself, below, and let me know if you have any desire to join me in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!
