2020 Electric McLaren Hypercar to Cost Less than P1

Even before the final production version was revealed, we already loved the 900-plus HP McLaren P1 hybrid hypercar. Since its launch, rumors have circulated that an all-electric version of the bad-a** hybrid would see production- and now, it seems those rumors have been confirmed. Autoguide is reporting than an all-electric P1 could arrive as early as 2020.

The best part? That all-new, electric McLaren P1 will carry a price tag that is significantly lower than the million-plus dollar asking price of the outgoing car.

It’s important to realize, though, that this new P1 won’t simply be an electric version of the old P1. As one McLaren insider put it, the British automaker “will not make a P1.5 … (but will wait for) another step in technology.” And, since McLaren P1 owners have been known to take their cars out on the track, the company is aiming for 30 minutes of track running from its all-electric McLaren P1, with a 30-minute break for battery charging before it can be sent out on the track, again. (!)

You can let us know what you think of the prospect of an electric McLaren, and what it might mean for Tesla’s stranglehold on the high end of the EV market, in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!
