Those of us who congregate here at Gas2 are well informed about electric cars. Oh, sure, we may squabble among ourselves about whether a Chevy Volt is really an electric car or whether the Nissan LEAF has enough range, but for the most part, we are reasonably well informed.
However, for hundreds of millions of Americans, an electric car is still a mystery wrapped in an enigma inside a battery. They don’t know what an electric car is or why they should want to own one. National Drive Electric Week is designed to make more people aware of electric cars in the hope they will decide to get one for themselves and join the green car revolution.
The idea began back in 2011 as National Plug In Day. Back then, there were events in 26 cities. This year, there were 196 events in 187 cities, according to EV Obsession. More than 130,000 people attended and got to see both production electric cars and conventional cars that had been converted to electricity. Many got to ride in an electric car for the very first time. The annual event is promoted by Plug In America, The Sierra Club, and the Electric Auto Association. In 2015, events took place for the first time in Canada, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.
Joel Levin, Plug In America’s executive director said: “Once again we’ve seen that National Drive Electric Week produces concrete results that boost sales in addition to raising awareness of plug-in vehicles from neighborhood to board room.”
Michael Brune, Sierra Club’s executive director told reporters, “National Drive Electric Week’s record-breaking events show that Americans want to move forward – they want clean energy and they want 21st-century solutions to climate disruption. With more chargers in the ground and EVs on the road than ever before, it’s clear we’re driving forward, not backwards – clean energy is here, and it’s here to stay.”
The 6th National Drive Electric Week is already scheduled for Sept. 10 through 18, 2016. Any vehicle manufacturer who hopes to sell electric cars should become a sponsor of this annual happening. It’s a great way to spread the word about electric cars and attract new customers.
