GreenTeam Electric Racer Sets 0–100 KM/H World Record — 1.779 Seconds

One of the reasons many of us are convinced electric vehicles are the future are their wicked crazy instant torque. The jump off the line, even for a vehicle like the Nissan Leaf, is wonderful.

But some vehicles are set up to make that jump better, and some are set up to make it to 100 km/h (~60 mph) at a wicked fast pace. Now, a Formula 1–styled racer developed by students at the University of Stuttgart in Germany have set a world record for a 0–100 km/h time in an electric car. As you can see in the title, that new record is 1.779 seconds. I guess it takes some time, but the record and further details will appear here. You can watch the speed demon in this video:

As you can see, it took the team two days of efforts to break the record, which was previously 1.785 seconds.

Putting this into perspective, if you’ve driven the insane Tesla P85D, note that it wouldn’t have a chance on this student car. Of course, the record-breaking car is not a “real car.” But focusing on the purpose of quickness to 100 km/h, driving this thing must be like driving in Maximum Plaid Mode. Even the new Ludicrous Mode for the Tesla P90D will take an extra second to get you to 100 km/h. And it crushes just nearly every Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, and Porsche on the planet.

I love that funny electric squeal this racer makes, btw. Check out the video if you haven’t yet.

A big congrats to the University of Stuttgart team. Maybe some of them will go on to working with Tesla, maybe even on the next Roadster!
