Porsche 918 Spyder Production Ends After #918


Priced at over $800,000 and boasting one of the most advanced and powerful plug-in hybrid drivetrains on the planet, the Porsche 918 Spyder is unquestionably one of the most desirable cars on the planet right now. And now that production has ended after just 918 units built, the value of the Porsche 918 Spyder has almost assuredly gone up.

Infused with much of the same technology that went into the Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid, the Porsche 918 Spyder was able to set lap records on the Nürburgring and records for fuel economy among high-powered performance cars. Regularly lumped in with the LaFerrari and McLaren P1 as one of the world’s most powerful production cars, the combination of two electric motors and a 4.6 liter twin-turbo V8 spun out about 887 horsepower and 940 lb-ft of torque. A 6.8 kWh electric battery provided a paltry 12 miles of electric driving range, but the instant torque allowed the 3,600 lb hypercar to accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in just 2.2 seconds.

From the onset, Porsche had planned a limited production run, and it’s taken nearly two years for the automaker to go through its allotment of cars. But while production might be over, we’re only just starting to see the trickle-down of technology that made the 918 Spyder such a cutting edge car. Porsche is already mulling the idea of adding plugs to legendary vehicles like the 911, and an all-electric Porsche sedan is said to be coming soon too. In other words, Porsche’s electric revolution has only just begun.
