Legendary Formula One driver Stirling Moss has oft been described as “the greatest driver to never win the World Championship”, having won 16 Formula One Grand Prix victories during his 14 year racing career. These days, the 85-year old racing legend gets around town thanks to a tiny French EV called the Renault Twizy, which Moss co-starred with in the above advertisement.
“First of all, it has two seats, so I can take somebody with me,” he told the Telegraph back in December. “There’s no congestion charge, you can park nose into the pavement, or even in a metered bay without being charged. Also it’s quiet and the battery charge lasts for about 50 miles, so I think it’s ideal as a city car. It wouldn’t be so good in the country, where you have to drive 15 miles to get anywhere and still get back.”
Like any car enthusiast though, Moss couldn’t leave well-enough alone, upgrading to a Bilstein suspension for a more comfortable ride. I honestly didn’t even know there were suspension upgrades for the Twizy, but apparently there are. Moss also had custom side vents and an always-fashionable shade of British racing green sprayed onto the French electric car.
While some Formula One fans may feel betrayed by Moss’s attraction to a French electric car, the racing legend is actually in good company. Famous drag racer Don “Big Daddy” Garlits is trying to reach 200 MPH in his all-electric dragster, and the FIA Formula E series has attracted plenty of top Formula One talent to its roster.
If the men who push their racing machines to the edge are getting on the electric car bandwagon, maybe there’s a good reason for it.
