Watch The Power Of Porsche’s 919 Hybrid Against Audi

For the 2015 racing season, team Porsche made substantial changes to the 919 Hybrid in a bid to keep the seemingly-unbeatable Audi R18 e-tron at bay. This includes upping the KERS hybrid system to 8 megajoules, double the hybrid power of the reigning Audi race cars.

That extra power was put on display at the 6 Hours of Spa this past weekend, when Porsche and Audi again duked it out for the lead of the LMP1 class. In this brief clip you can see how the extra hybrid power helps the Porsche’s acceleration, but as soon as the juice wears out, the Porsche falls back behind as the Audi reaches terminal velocity quicker. The Audi Sport Team would claim its second victory this day, seeming to back the decision to focus more on the turbodiesel V6 over the hybrid boost.

What’s undeniable is that the addition of the hybrid boost system has added an extra layer of flavor to endurance racing. How could you not get pumped up watching two cutting-edge race cars fighting for first place? The trickle-down effect may not work for the economy, but it does for automotive technology, as many of the systems displayed here may one day be considered a piece of commonplace technology. On-ramps would be a lot more fun with a hybrid boost button to deploy.
