Ben & Jerry’s Uses Tesla Model S To Deliver Free Ice Cream And Activism

Crazy ice cream maker Ben & Jerry has never been bashful about its liberal leanings, or using its confections as a pulpit for activism. The latest Earth-friendly campaign from Ben & Jerry’s has converted a Tesla Model S into an electric ice cream delivery vehicle, which will also dole out a healthy dose of climate change activism on the side.

The Save Our Swirled campaign aims to convert 500,000 ice cream fans from pacifists to activists, with the Tesla Model S converted to carry up to 1,500 servings of delicious creamy confections at a time. Kia had a similar idea with its Soul EV ice cream van, but compared to the Model S it’s a little too…traditional (not something I thought I’d ever say about the Soul). Turns out, if you remove the back seat of a Tesla Model S, there’s a lot of room for hauling stuff…like ice cream! I don’t know how much ice cream your typical creepy neighborhood van carries, but for some reason I think it’d taste even better coming from a Tesla.

From the press release:

“It’s no secret that manmade carbon pollution is spinning out of control, and the Save Our Swirled Tour is one of many ways Ben & Jerry’s is hoping to have a positive impact. The time for action on this issue is now, and 2015 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet for turning around our climate future. In the words of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon: “We are the last generation that can fight climate change. We have a duty to act.”

This is hardly Ben & Jerry’s only green initiative; one of its factories in the Netherlands (sorta) runs on waste ice cream byproducts, and back in 2008 the brand partnered with Greenpeace on a greener kind of ice cream freezer. Ben & Jerry’s definitely walks the walk when it comes to sustainability, and it’d be great if more companies took a stand against climate change in a similar way to Tesla and Ben & Jerrys. Sometimes, that means building a better automobile, and sometimes that means handing out lots and lots of free ice cream.

Who says ice cream and activism can’t go hand-in-hand? The Ben & Jerry’s ice cream Tesla is currently in New York, and its final destination is San Diego, with multiple stops in-between. Get some ice cream, and get involved!
