The UAE state of Dubai can claim to have the 6th highest number of millionaires per capita in the world, and many of them drive high-powered supercars that would leave your typical American police cruiser way, way behind. So the Dubai police department has enlisted a number of supercars of its own, and recently added its first hybrid…a BMW i8.
Though spending over $136,000 on a single police cruiser may seem like a waste of money, Dubai’s police fleet has so much more expensive cars in it than that. In addition to the hybrid Bimmer, the Dubai police have access to Corvettes, Ferraris, and even a multi-million dollar Bugatti Veyron to keep supercar-owning oil barons in check. Average citizens need not fear the supercar police, as it may soon be illegal for people of lower incomes to drive. Dubai is also the only police fleet that I know of with a high production-value promotional video showcasing all the awesome vehicles at its disposal.
The BMW i8 is in some ways a more important addition to Dubai’s constabulary than those other exotics though, as it’s the first hybrid car to join the force. The combination of high performance and eco-friendliness could perhaps indicate a new direction for the oil-rich city-state as it seeks to embrace cleaner forms of energy. The i8 is a great pursuit option, and even though the department can obviously afford the fuel bill, I’d love to see the Bimmer’s fuel costs alongside the rest of the police fleet.
If this trend continues, it won’t be long before a Tesla P85D shows up wearing police livery too. Imagine silently sneaking up on an unsuspecting sheik before flicking on those red and blues, and reeling them in with the Tesla’s instant torque. It’s almost like foreshadowing how one day, Dubai’s immense oil wealth will be totally irrelevant, once electric cars rule the world.
