It was clear almost immediately following the reveal of the Chevy Bolt electric vehicle that GM had every intention of putting it into production. GM then went on to announce its production plans for the Bolt, following up with a webpage for the EV concept that puts all the pertinent information at your fingertips.

In addition to being able to sign up for updates (which your intrepid reporter just did), the site includes a lot of information on the engineering of the Bolt, as well as some gorgeous pictures. The more I look at it, the more I like it, and trust me when I say it looks even better in person. With a proposed price of $30,000 after tax incentives and a 200-mile range, it’s the first affordable electric car that could actually replace your daily driver for 99% of your trips.

The site also points to features like the minimal center console, which holds a 10-inch touchscreen that controls most of the Bolt’s functions, not unlike the Tesla Model S. Also something worth noting that I haven’t seen publicized too much elsewhere is a 45-minute charge time to 80% with standard DC fast-charging. It’s a well-rounded concept to be sure, but because it’s still in concept form, I think it’s important we approach the Chevy Bolt cautiously.

For example, I doubt all that expensive glass (especially the roof!) will make it into production, at least not as a standard feature. And as cool as the interior is, I expect the designers to tone it back a bit for production, in the name of simplicity and cost-savings.

All that aside though, the Chevy Bolt is slated to begin production by the end of next year, ahead of the Tesla Model III’s scheduled debut. Can the Chevy Bolt be a spoiler to Elon Musk’s mass-market EV? It’s far too soon to tell, but at the very least, GM seems to be taking the Tesla threat seriously. That’s a good thing for all of us.
