For Tesla Roadster owners it was a Merry Christmas indeed, as Elon Musk tweeted that the forthcoming upgrade will indeed offer a nearly 400 mile driving range per charge. While we’re still waiting on all the juicy details, Musk also tweeted that such an upgrade “*will* happen long term” for the Model S as well.
It was long suspected that a longer range battery would be what Musk delivered to Roadster owners, as the battery technology in the Roadster dates back to before its 2008 debut. Even then it offered a compelling 244 miles of EPA-rated range, and despite an unfavorable Top Gear review, it provided enough of a launchpad for the superb Model S to come to market.
Roadster upgrade will enable non-stop travel from LA to SF — almost 400 mile range. Details tmrw. Merry Christmas!

Roadster owners can be proud to know they were among the first early adopters of the hottest tech commodity on the market, though I imagine more than a few have looked on with envy at the many cool features of the Model S. The pop-out handles, 17-inch touchscreen, and 691 horsepower Dual Motor Drive in the Model S means Roadster owners have fewer bragging points.
With a 400 mile battery though, that all changes, as Tesla will be the first to offer that much driving range in a production electric vehicle. If the original Roadster was a glimpse of the future, this battery upgrade is just as much of a hint of what lies in store for Model S owners. With the tantalizing possibility of 400 miles between charges, what of the main talking points against electric cars becomes moot.
Merry Christmas electric car fans, and thanks Santa Musk.
