The 2014 season of Formula 1 racing came to a close at this morning’s Abu Dhabi GP, and the nail-biting, season-long duel for the championship between Mercedes’ drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was over by the first corner- just not quite in the way that many (including me) predicted.
Lewis Hamilton, rather than crash his teammate out of contention the way Senna or Schumacher might have, played it absolutely straight and beat Rosberg- mercilessly- on the track.
Hamilton blasted past Rosberg at the start, and stretched out his lead with every lap. Rosberg couldn’t catch him, made unforced errors, and- finally- his Mercedes succumbed to the same kind of electrical gremlins that had plagued Hamilton all year long, sliding well out of the points in the closing laps of the Abu Dhabi GP.
To Rosberg’s credit, as well, he didn’t pack it in and pit when called to on the radio. Instead, he preferred to finish the 2014 season- his best, yet in F1- in the car and on the track.
Further back in the field, Force India driver Sergio Perez celebrated the signing of a new contract with the team by putting in an impressive 7th place finish, hilariously leap-frogging both the highly-vaunted Kimi Raikkonen (who displaced Perez’ progress in Ferrari’s young driver academy program) AND Kevin Magnussen (the driver who replaced him at McLaren at the end of 2013) in the process.
Closer to the front, Williams driver Felipe Massa kept Lewis honest and very nearly won the race. In the closing laps, Massa was closing in on Hamilton but simply ran out of laps. Still, Massa is looking very racy again, in a way that he simply hasn’t since his horrific 2009 accident.
Finally, I’d like to wrap up the season’s Formula 1 race coverage by remarking on what a weird season 2014 really was. By not winning the Abu Dhabi GP in a Williams, Massa ensured that 2014 was the first season since 1967 that neither a Williams, Ferrari, or McLaren won a race.
Here’s how the Abu Dhabi GP played out for everyone else- and definitely come back to Gas 2 in a few days to check out our Formula 1 2014 season recap. Thanks for sticking with us all year long. Enjoy!
