If you’re a Star Wars fan like me, you already know what scene I’m talking about just from reading the title. And if you don’t, well I’ve posted the famous scene down below for your viewing pleasure (you’re welcome). Afterwards you should see why I am comparing this video of drone racing to this iconic sci-fi movie scene.
The video comes from the French Airgonay club as they raced their high-speed quadcopters through a narrow forest path. It’s possibly the very beginnings of an all new kind of motorsport, where drivers are replaced by drone operators piloting small craft capable of impossibly tight turns and high speeds. It’s like a miniaturized version of rally racing, minus the human element, which opens all sorts of possibilities.
Imagine a race track laced with traps, tricks, and manmade obstacles that could kill or maim a human driver. But busting up a drone, while expensive, wouldn’t be career ending, and it could really open the doors to creative track design. It’s hella-fun to watch, and the group says that one day the drones might even wear lasers or other weapons to shoot down or impair competitors’ vehicles.
It’s like a video game come to real life, and I predict that it won’t be long before this idea gains some serious traction…if the FAA doesn’t kill our fun first. Since when did France become more free than America? Until full-size hoverbikes become more affordable though, this might be our next best bet.
