Warm-Up Lap: Sit Shotgun In The Autonomous Tesla Supercar

Last Friday the world awoke to the news that Elon Musk and Tesla Motors had prepared a nearly 700 horsepower version of the Model S. Along with a pair of autonomous driving features that are the first of many, Tesla took a big step forward with last week’s announcement. So what better way to start the week than a ride-along in the new Tesla supercar?

The Dual Motor Tesla Model S P85D can zip from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3.2 seconds, making it one of the fastest automobiles on the planet. It actually accelerates faster than perennial favorites like the Viper, Porsche 911, and even the McLaren F1, despite weighing quite literally twice as much as the original hypercar. Add to that seating for up 5 adults plus two children and an automatic lane-changer and sign-reading cruise control system, and Tesla has caught up ito the likes of Mercedes and BMW in short order with this latest reveal.

While the all-wheel drive/semi-autonomous Model S won’t go on sale until February, media and owners were treated to a special test drive where they got to experience the incredible speed and computer-guided driving system.

Eventually we will see an automated Tesla beating human supercar drivers in a head-to-head drag race, and that day might be that far off.
