The first Russian GP at Sochi will go into the books as another Mercedes 1-2 finish. It will be remembered as the race where Mercedes clinched its 2014 Constructors’ Championship after wresting the title from Red Bull Racing, which has won the Constructors’ for the last four years running. It wasn’t without drama, either, as Nico Rosberg made a thrilling pass on Lewis Hamilton on the first lap, only to throw the race away with a massive lockup at the next corner.
After that first-lap, though, race was became a snooze-fest. The Russian GP at Sochi was so boring, in fact, that, with seven laps to go, I did something I haven’t done in about twenty years: I turned off a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
So, … yeah. I have no idea how the race played out, but I can imagine that the race continued to be something of a high-speed parade until the end. Not even that high-speed, in fact, since most of the radio transmissions that were being broadcast were about trimming back fuel consumption just to make it to the end.
Here’s how the field ended up at the end. Here’s hoping the FIA’s decision to introduce safety cars whenever workers are present and some sort of engine shake-up in the off-season collude to make the 2015 Russian GP a bit more enjoyable.
