Formula 1 2014: Monza GP Results – Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton Monza 2014

Surprising absolutely no-one who’s been following the 2014 season of Formula 1 racing, the engine-heavy, high-speed Monza track at the Italian Grand Prix saw Mercedes-powered cars dominate qualifying. The works Mercedes team, especially, that had a head start in designing its chassis around the innovative “split turbo” engine, showed how far ahead of the pack they really are, as Lewis Hamilton set a time that was some 1.3 seconds quicker than Fernando Alonso’s expertly driven Ferrari in P7.

Alonso’s P7, by the way, was the best a non-Mercedes engined car would do on the day.

Perhaps even more telling than Alonso’s 1.3 second gap to Mercedes, however, was the fact that the much more aerodynamic, Adrian Newey-penned Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo could do no better than the Spaniard. Such is the power deficit of this year’s Renault power unit.

It’s going to be a long, long Italian Grand Prix at Monza for anyone not driving a Mercedes, methinks … unless the Mercedes boys crash each other out on the first lap, like they did two weeks ago at Belgium. If that happens, watch for Ferrari to pull some magic out of their hats in front of the home crowd.
