Behold! The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Tonight Mazda revealead the all new-from-the-ground-up 2016 Miata MX-5 to the world in a worldwide livestreaming eventfrom Monterey, California. Mazda has already showcased the new, lighter SkyActiv chassis, nut now we’ve got a look at the whole car. And it looks good, really really good.

But the Duran Duran centric musical reveal? Awful. Atrocious. The worst marketing stunt since GM launched the Chevy Sonic with a shitty song. Somebody should probably be fired for this God awful idea.

Literally, I sat here watching, cringing, hoping that they wouldn’t play another crappy song, and instead would just tell me about one of the most talked-about cars of the year. Just…why? You’ve made me wait this long, why on Earth would you make me sit through Duran Duran?

Finally though, the Miata reveal got to the Miata itself, where things like standard LED headlights and weight loss of “more than 100 kg” (or at least 220 lbs) were mentioned. You’ll also notice that the 2016 Miata doesn’t have much in the way of body lines, and it’s lower to the gruond as well without sacraficing any of the (little) interior room.

Speaking of compact, engineers gave the 2016 Miata a simple three-gauge cluster with a tachometer front and center. A new pop-up console handles many of the car’s functions, which leads to a much, much simpler interior that isn’t overloaded with buttons. Having just spent a week with the current Miata, I have to say so far my favorite change by far is the simpler, sportier interior.

So what will be powering the 2016 Miata? Mazda isn’t saying just yet, though the rumor mill points to a naturally-aspirated 2.0 liter, and a more punchy 1.5 liter turbocharged engine (possibly offered down the line). There’s also rumor that a hardtop coupe version might make its way to dealerships later.

Not that the 2016 Miata needs any help in the looks department. All my gripes about Duran Duran aside, this car looks every bit like the 21st century Miata the world deserves. It’s stronger, more aggressive, more manly, but without losing its roots. A lot of effort reportedly went into designing the back end, and while it doesn’t have the best-looking automotive booty I’ve ever seen, I wouldn’t kick it out of my garage either.

Anyways, Mazda is staying mum on details like powertrain options, horsepower, and fuel economy numbers…and I’m starting to think we won’t hear about them for some time year. But hey, if you want to see Duran Duran fail to impress an audience of automotive and “lifestyle” journalists, just skip ahead to the 41-minute mark.

For the rest of you, just skip to the 1 hour 38 minute mark to hear the host get back to discussing the 2016 Miata (beware, poor audio ahead…ugh).

Let this be a lesson to automakers; a highly-anticipated car doesn’t need a flashy reveal. Just show us the damn car, tell us some stats, and call it a day.
