By the year 2050, the world will need 1.2 billion tons of food to feed everyone on earth. Much of farming involves backbreaking labor and drudgery – tasks that could be done more reliably and efficiently by robots. Can robotic machinesenable us to cut down on pesticide use, soil erosion, and seedling damage? Or will they put tens of thousands out of work? Will improvements in farming efficiency lead to a golden age where nobody on Earth worries about going hungry? Or will we end up with a permanently unemployed underclass of former farm workers?
