Video: 2016 4 Cyl Porsche Caught Testing at Nürburgring

What does that sound like to you? To the ears of the videographer, who spends hundreds of hours each year “camped out” at Germany’s famous Nürburgring, the cars shown in this video don’t sound like the current, 6-cylinder Porsche Cayman and Boxster, and could be mules for the oft-rumored, long anticipated 4 cyl Porsches expected to debut in 2016.

I say “long anticipated” because rumors about a production 4 cyl Porsche – the spiritual successor to the classic 914 – has been discussed since Volkswagen first showed off its BlueSport Concept roadster way back in 2009. At the time, it was believed that the project had been given a green-light for production, and that Porsche would benefit from VW’s economies of scale by offering a petrol-fueled version of the range-topping VW in the form of an entry-level P car.

News of the 54 MPG mid-engine concept quieted as more and more noise was made about Volkswagen’s new-age, 200 MPG, XL1 super car. This video, as well as ever-tightening CAFE standards and global emissions requirements, however, make a credible case for the ongoing development of a 4 cyl Porsche.

What do you think, dear readers? Is this video the real deal, is it part of Porsche’s larger hybrid plans, or is a 4 cyl Porsche just another thing that entry-level yuppies dream about in sweaty fits that will never happen? ? Let us know what you think in the comments section, below. Enjoy!
