Video: Tesla Model S Exceeds Power Ratings On Dyno

One of the most common pastimes for car enthusiasts have been “dyno days”, where us gearheads gather to measure the power of our cars. Typically, owners of unmodified vehicles are disappointed when their wheel-horsepower ratings come in at far less than the advertised numbers…but not if you own a Tesla Model S.

This dyno video shows that not only does the Tesla Model S make its advertised horsepower numbers, but actually exceeds them. It even maxes out the 2,000 ft-lb torque rating of the mobile dyno!

Technically,a fully-loaded Tesla Model S P85+ is rated at 416 horsepower and over 430 ft-lbs of torque. Because the electric motors deliver the power directly to the tires without a power-robbing transmission, driveshaft, or differential in the way, the pair of electric motors are able to deliver 100% of that power…and then some. On the dyno, this Tesla put down 436 horsepower, about 5% more than it is rated at. Is this just a factory freak, or did the owner make some unmentioned modifications to get some extra power out of the motors?

If true, this means the Tesla Model S P85+ is actually more powerful than the Ford Mustang GT, the Chevy Camaro SS, and the Dodge Challenger R/T.

Does that mean we can officially rank the Tesla Model S as an American muscle car? This guy thinks so.
