Toyota Studying Hover Cars To Improve Efficiency

Flying cars may not be practical, but what about cars that hover just a few inches off the ground? Toyota is studying the concept of “hover” cars that float just above the roadways, as a way to dramatically improve fuel economy.

Sounds like science fiction, but Toyota is quite serious about the concept, dedicating resources at its most advanced laboratory to study the possibility of such a concept. By eliminating an actual, physical connection to the road, Toyota could eliminate rolling resistance all together, and the entire model for designing automobiles would be tossed out the window.

Also, freakin’ hover cars!!

The Verge reports that Toyota executives refused to elaborate further in anyway, and to be honest the notion of a production hover car is still pretty far fetched. There are innumerable obstacles to overcome, the primary one being…how do you stop a hover car in a hurry? I imagine you don’t, and then there’s the issue of sound, cost, and practicality.

…but one day, a Toyota-badged hover car might be more than just the concept of wild-eyed engineers.
