Video: Audi Welcomes Porsche Back To Le Mans

This weekend, the world will watch as the fastest cars and the best drivers descend on Circuit de la Sarthe for the annual running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Perennial 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Audi has put together a little “Welcome Back” video for Porsche’s return to the famous endurance race.

With 16 Le Mans wins, Porsche has long dominated the endurance racing circuit, though it has been absent from the Circuit de la Sarthe for more than a decade. Since then, Audi has become the dominating force, racking up 12 wins since the year 2000, closing the victory gap by quite a bit. Leading the charge is the Audi R18 e-tron Quattro, a turbodiesel hybrid that has helped push the World Endurance Championship towards embracing alternative fuels and hybrid technology.

But Porsche isn’t just going to let Audi take that title from them, and the new four-cylinder Porsche 919 Hybrid has proven to be a true contender on the track. No wonder Audi put together this little “Welcome Back” video for their crosstown rival, driving this all-out race car through town and even doing burnouts in front of Porsche’s Stuggart headquarters. This rivalry is alive and well.

Then again, the Toyota TS040 Hybrid has been winning races left and right, outpacing both Audi and Porsche on the track. Perhaps Audi’s next brash display of racing prowess should take place in the Aichi prefecture in Japan, where Toyota is headquartered.

Who will win the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans? We find out this weekend, so stay tuned.
