IndyCar 2014: Indy 500 Race Results (w/ Video)

Today’s running of the Indy 500 went almost 2 hours without a caution, leading to drivers trimming fuel and preserving their tires as they jockeyed for position. All to be in the right place at the right time when the inevitable finally happened – and happen it did. After the first restart of the race, the cautions started coming in quick succession thanks to the efforts of Townsend Bell, who managed to ruin the races of both Ed Carpenter and James Hinchcliffe before finally, mercifully taking himself out a few laps later. None of that drama, however, can take away from Ryan Hunter-Reay’s fantastic win.

And it was a fantastic win. Ryan Hunter-Reay’s Honda held off the Chevrolet of three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves in was the second closest finish in the 100+ year history of the Indy 500.

Just behind the dueling PMW race cars of Hunter-Reay and Castroneves were Marco Andretti, the young Colombian Carlos Munñoz, and Juan Pablo Montoya, who fought his way from 11th up to the lead, went a lap down due to a pit lane speeding penalty, then fought his way back, again, to finish in 5th place.

Just behind that lead pack was Indy 500 rookie Kurt Busch, who put in a tremendous open-wheel debut in what, in an ideal world, would be a prelude to his transition to Formula 1 with the new Haas F1 team.

Those are the hot points and highlights, as I saw them. You can watch the last few laps of the race, at top, and experience the nail-biting ending for yourself. Then see how the race played out for the rest of the 33-car field, below. Enjoy!
