We first covered the upcoming 2015 Fiat 500x back in 2012 in an article that predicted the 500x would compete with the Mini Countryman and … well, that was about it. A mere two years later and the small, premium crossover market is positively booming with Buick, Chevrolet, Honda, Jeep, and even Lexus getting in on the act. To be relevant in this emerging field, then, the new Fiat would have to bring something pretty innovative to the table. Luckily for Fiat fans, they did: concept-car styling.
Just to refresh your memory, this is what the original rendering/concept 500x looked like when we showed it off (almost exactly) two years ago …
… and, as you can see in these production line photos of the car’s unibody, the new-for-2105 Fiat 500x looks almost exactly like the aggressively styled, sloping rooflined, big wheeled sporty off-roader we were promised. It looks great, I think.
Underpinning the new 500x is the same fuel-efficient, trail-rated 4WD drive train found in the recently-introduced 2015 Jeep Renegade (itself based on the Europe-only Fiat Panda 4×4). As such, the 500x should be a capable all-weather performer, especially if Fiat has the good sense to offer a turbocharged Abarth version. While we wait for news on that, just try to think of the 500x as a sportier, off-roadier version of the Fiat 500L Chris drove a while back. Which is to say “practical enough, but probably best as a second car”.
What do you guys think? Is the 2015 Fiat 500x something that might lure you into a Fiat showroom, or will you be holding out for an electric/hybrid version of the (not quite so) little Fiat? Let us know!
