What’s it like to drive a Formula E electric race car? Chinese driver Ho-Pin Tung had some interesting things to say after his first time behind the wheel. Where other drivers said the Spark-Renault SRT_01E is remarkably similar to regular Formula race cars, Tung thought it was quite different…but in a good way.
This video comes with a bonus soundtrack featuring the electric race car whizzing around the Circuito Monteblanco in Spain during a recent test day. Tung has tested Formula cars for Willians and Renault, though it took him some time to get used to the instant torque. Once he did though, the car actually exceeded his expectations, which is a good sign of things to come.
Tung is also happy that the Formula E schedule is kicking off the series in Beijing, racing around the iconic “Bird’s Nest” Olympic stadium in a unique track layout. Because Formula E racers run so silently and without any emissions whatsoever, setting up a race course in the middle of a modern city faces fewer regulatory hurdles.
What once seemed like a distant dream is now just a few short months away, bringing a world-spanning (and possibly world-changing) electric racing series to enthusiasts across the globe.
