The Toyota FT-1 Concept finally adds some excitement to a stodgy lineup, and the recently-retired Jay Leno got a personal tour of the Future Toyota. What makes this concept so special is just how functional it is, fueling hopes that this really is the Supra successor we’ve been waiting for.
The FT-1 Concept was apparently built with an eye towards using real production methods and features. So while some things, like the winglet mirrors and crossbrace that connects the cockpit and engine bay, might need some tweaking, many features on the FT-1 are actually functional. This includes the steering wheel-integrated screen and motorized rear wing. Who knew the company responsible for the humdrum Prius could be so cheeky? We also learn that the FT stands for “Future Toyota”, fueling hopes that this is more than just a concept.
Please be the next Supra.
Alas, the proposed hybrid drivetrain seems to be just for show, as the FT-1 never fires up during the 13-minute segment. So if this is the next Supra, it’s still pretty far off, and being the only car of its kind, Toyota still has a lot of work ahead of it. But like Leno, I desperately want Toyota to build this car, and at a somewhat affordable price, though I’d also like to see the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R make it to the streets as well..
If the rumors are true, and the Toyota FT-1 does somehow make it onto showroom floors, I think its fair to say we can all stop calling Toyota boring. We’ll have to find another car company to pick on. Any suggestions?
