As one of America’s oldest endurance races, the 12 Hours of Sebring is an important event on the calendar of many racing series. This weekend this great American race was all about ze Germans though, as the Audi R18 e-tron quattro hybrid race cars dominated the competition, taking both 1st and 2nd place in this historic race.
The Audi R18 e-tron made its name for itself last year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, beating out the rest of the competition with ease thanks to its fancy flywheel hybrid setup. Audi went on to win the 2012 World Endurance Championship, beating out the rest of the American le Mans Series competition and becoming the first hybrid car to win an ALMS race at Sebring. Corvette Racing’s No.4 car driven by Tommy Milner, Oliver Gavin, and Richard Westbrook took 1st place in the GT class.
But 2013 is a new season, and Toyota has returned with a renewed sense of purpose with an upgraded race car. The Toyota TS030 was not on the track this past weekend, as the WEC season doesn’t officially begin until April 15th, But seeing the ease with which Audi continues to squash the competition can’t be doing much for morale.
This is merely the opening salvo in a long-running war of speed between Toyota and Audi. The first battle goes to the Germans, but the Japanese aren’t likely to just roll over. Who are you rooting for come April?
