Toyota Bringing Record Setting EV To Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak has a long and exciting history of motorsports action, and that history has taken a new twist with the recent influx of purpose-built electric racers. This year’s Race to the Clouds will see electric vehicles from Mitsubishi, Monster Tajima, and a converted BMW M3 from EV’s West. Now Toyota is throwing its hat into the ring with a new version of the electric racer that set a Nurburgring lap record for EV’s called the TMG EV P002.

If this car looks familiar, that’s because Toyota has kept the body and shape of the record-setting TMG EV P001, and has focused its efforts on making more power and speed. After all, the TMG EV P001 beat the previous record for EV’s around the Nordschelife loop by well over a minute. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Toyota’s engineers instead worked on increasing the power output for the P002, going from 375 HP/280 kW to 470 HP/350 KW for the pikes peak run. That will give the TMG EV P002 an estimated top speed of 240 kph/150 mph, more than enough speed for tackling the Race to the Clouds. And while the Toyota team already has one record under its belt, the competition from Tajima and the other EV teams is sure to make this a close contest.

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a Toyota fan, and I often mock them for making some truly boring automobiles. But if Toyota continues down this path of performance EV’s, and dare I hope actually brings one to market some day…it could cause me to re-evaluate my position on this particular Japanese automaker.

With Toyota entering the fray, it really is anybody’s record to beat. What electric vehicle will come home with the victory after this year’s Race to the Clouds? Gentlemen, place your bets.
