Smart For-Us Truck is Cute and Maybe Even Practical

smart for us pickupThe Smart is super cute. It’s also tiny and has pretty much no storage space whatsoever; while the former is definitely part of its appeal, the lack of space to put things does put a few people off. Addressing that issue is the prototype Smart For-Us truck at the Detroit Auto Show.

I did say truck. Let that sink in for a moment. I’ll wait. …you back? Good. Just like the Smart, the Smart For-Us is also incredibly adorable.

Specifications, It Has Them

We’ve talked about it a little bit before; regular Gas2 readers may remember that it’s got a 55kW electric motor, with 75HP and producing 98 ft-lbs of torque. That should make it pretty maneuverable and easy to drive. It’s also supposed to get a top speed of 75mph – enough to take on the interstate, if you don’t mind staying in the right lane. Or not getting speeding tickets.

The lithium ion battery has a capacity of 17.6 kWh and takes at most 8 hours to charge, which it can do from either a dedicated charging station or from an ordinary household outlet.

Designed to Hold eBikes, You Say

While the storage space is, of course, minimal compared to a massive half-ton dually farm truck, it will comfortably hold two smart e-bikes and even charge their batteries while you drive. Smart’s press release emphasizes the possibility of driving the little truck out to a nature preserve and taking the bikes out for a ride, all with zero emissions. The body has even been raised by two inches to help it go off-road (or over a curb, or something, I don’t know).

The For-Us also has a holder for a smartphone instead of a traditional rearview mirror, which in theory would play video of the road behind the truck (because, of course, of the integrated video camera). I’m not sure I like this particular idea; it seems like it’s adding an extra unnecessary step with the potential for something to go wrong.

Weird rear-facing camera aside, I actually like this little thing a lot. I see tons of pick-ups on the road, and 99% of them are totally empty of anything that needs a pick-up to haul around. To me, this seems like a much better alternative – a little space for carrying stuff if I need it (plus it carries and charges the bikes! How great is that??), no emissions, low maintenance, low fuel costs… and it’s super cute to boot.

Love it? Hate it? Think it’s impractical? Let us know in the comments, below.
