Bosch / Mercedes Name Their Electric Love Child

Mercedes-Benz’ parent company, Daimler, and electronics supplier Bosch announced their joint-venture to build electric vehicle “engines” earlier this year, but now it’s official – and officially has a name:  EM Motive.

Mercedes-focused blog BenzInsider is reporting that the newly-formed EM Motive has plans to build electric of a modular design that – in theory – could be adapted for use in a wide range of vehicles, from (of course) Mercedes-Benz’ upcoming hybrids and Smart electric models to the next generation of Tesla automobiles.

The next-generation Smart ForTwo Electric Drive EV, set to be released sometime during early 2012, will likely be the first beneficiary of the new motor design, with the two companies projecting one million units will be built by 2020.
