A German in Paris

High-performance diesel engines, BluePerformance, and a hybrid oh my!  BMW is set to roll out the green at the Paris Auto show this year.  As the European Union tightens its emissions restrictions, everyone is expected to do their share to help clean up.

This year at the Paris Auto Show, BMW will unveil its new 6-cylinder, 3-liter diesel engine.  The engine will be featured in the new 3 and 7 series sedans.  Like its rival Mercedes, BMW is not sacrificing power for cleanliness.  The 330D (D as in Diesel) accelerates from 0-60 in just over 6 seconds and the average fuel economy of the car is just above 41 miles to the gallon.  Both the 7 and 3 series sedans meet the requirements to be Euro5 compliant, releasing 152 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer driven.

Further clean technology in Paris, BMW is also unveiling its BluePerformance technology.  BluePerformance is a neat concept that is meant to keep Nitrogen out of the atmosphere.  When too much Nitrogen enters the atmosphere, it combines with oxygen it creates nitric acid.  Nitric acid is that acid, the one that creates acid rain.  The BluePerformance technology does this by treating emissions with a catalyst that will break down the nitrogen compounds before it gets into the air.  The technology makes the engine compliant with the Euro6 emissions standards.

Lastly, BMW is set to release its concept hybrid in Paris as well.  The hybrid kind of baffles me because it is a SUV with an 8 cylinder engine.  I understand that the electric motor will make it more efficient, but I think putting an electric engine on an 8 cylinder engine is like putting sails on a cruise ship.  But who am I to judge?  My bike has a four cylinder engine on it.

Actually it doesn’t, and on another more serious note BMW’s AdvancedDiesel and BluePerformance will be available this year in the United States.  I couldn’t find any data on how the cars perform with biodiesel instead of diesel, it’d probably be an interesting statistic.
