f there was an award for the car that was “most improved” by a fresh redesign, there is no question who would be winning it this year: the Smart Fortwo.

The latest concept car from Mercedes sub-brand, Smart, corners like it’s on rails – because it is! Meet the Smart ForRail light rail commuter!
Can European-style micro-cars make it here in America? While many would say no, the Daimler Corporation is saying yes with the all-new, totally redesigned 2016 Smart ForTwo that debuted yesterday at the North American International Auto Show. Can this pint-sized people-mover strike a better chord with urbanites the second time around? Daimler certainly has done […]

German carmakers love art, and love art cars- and Smart is no exception, pulling the wraps off this psychedelic little number at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show!
In a bid to reduce costs on their next-generation city cars, Mercedes and Renault have decided to collaborate on the next-gen Renault TwinGo and 2015 Smart ForTwo, which were recently caught testing in the spy photos you see here.
When we think of Smart cars, we generally think of cramped, underpowered city cars with no performance ambitions whatsoever. But people more creative than us have come up with some unique solutions to the Smart’s lack of performance prowess, including a team who built a Smart 4×4 Buggy’s that they had hoped to bring to the Dakar Rally.
Whether we’re talking about the latest Smart, Gordon Murray’s F1-inspired supermini, or the super-awesome Peel 50, one question about these high-MPG micro cars always comes up: How safe is it? Inspired, perhaps, by the internet’s broad reserve of random Chuck Norris “facts“, one European engineering student set out to design a car that, despite its […]
Mercedes’ Smart brand has had its starts and stumbles in the US market, but it’s finding a niche among the alternative transportation crowd that just wants to get around town and get in and out of a parking space with minimal cost and minimum hassle … just like America’s scooterists. Smart’s next move, then, seems […]
I sent in my press registration for the 2012 North American International Auto Show, better known as the Detroit Auto Show. I’m looking forward to seeing what automakers launch the next year with, and it appears as though I will have to stop by the Smart booth this year. This morning Smart announced that it […]
The IAA 2011 is fast approaching – it starts Thursday, Sept. 15th in Frankfurt and will go on until the 25th. This year, electric cars get their own display – all of Hall 4. The usual suspects – Opel Ampera, Citroen C-ZERO, Renault Twizy, Peugeot iOn and the BMW prototype i3 and i8 – will all be there. Visitors can not only get information, but sign up to test drive a variety of electric cars.
The third generation of the electric Smart Car first seen in 2007 – the SmartForTwo ED – will be presented at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September. The little car is quicker than before, with a top speed of 75mph, and has an improved range of 87 miles. The power train was redesigned, nearly doubling […]
What does the future hold? One artist turned to Twitter to find out, and then went about illustrating the collective Twittersphere’s vision of the future on to a Smart ForTwo automobile. The future…in motion! A collaboration between illustrator Johanna Basford and Smart saw the car company ask Twitter to envision, in 140 characters or less, […]
Try it before you buy it. That seems to be the idea of the relationship between car maker Smart and rental agency Hertz. Hertz will be carrying Smart ED’s (electric drive) for rental starting in 2011.
I’m not a huge fan of Daimler’s ‘other’ brand. Smart cars just look so… small and awkward. But, before you hate on me, I do realize that they are relatively affordable, sip fuel, and remarkably safe for their size. Just… they’re not for me. Seems a boatload of other people agree as Smart sales have been plunging […]
Yesterday I brought you rumors of an impending tie-up announcement by Renault-Nissan and Daimler. Surprise, surprise. The companies have today made it official… and provided some more tidbits about what the cooperation actually means. Chief interesting bits among them: technology sharing on upcoming fully electric versions of the Renault Twingo (very popular in Europe) and […]
