Though it almost didn’t make it to market, the Audi R8 e-tron got a second chance at production, and an Audi executive confirmed as much.. Claiming 280 miles of driving range on a single charge, it sounds like it will go farther than even the much-vaunted Tesla Model S.
The 280 mile figure is more than double the original expected range for the Audi R8 e-tron, which was tentatively rated at 130 miles between charges. In the real world though, tests drives weren’t meeting expectations, and the R8 e-tron project was very nearly killed for good. A new battery pack gave the e-tron a lot more driving flexibility though, and probably helped performance as well, something Audi has been keen to inject into its green vehicles.
Still, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg said at a recent press conference that the Audi R8 e-tron will only be built in response to customer demand. In other words, you probably can’t just walk into an Audi dealership and drive out in an all-electric R8. It’s also probably going to be crazy-expensive considering the standard Audi R8 starts at $114,900.
Maybe Audi will take another crack at the Nurburgring record?
