BMW has launched its greenest car yet! The 116d is 2.0-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine delivering 115hp and has a fuel consumption of 54 mpg. It is BMW’s most fuel-efficient and least polluting car yet, and only available in Europe.

Dammit!

The car is even greener than BMW’s current World Green Car of the Year contender, the BMW 335d BluePerformance. Capable of a top speed of 125 miles per hour, the car has CO2 emissions of 118 g/km, and will be available in March. Three and five-door models will be available.

BMW is hoping to bolster sales with its fuel-efficient models. Patrick McKenna, BMW’s marketing manager, told the Wall Street Journal that modern diesel engines are now considerably more efficient than people believe. “They are demonstrably better than they were 25 years ago,” he says.

How I long for a diesel-hybrid. Anyone?
