New Service Runs Diesel Ski Shuttles on Veggie Oil

Powered by used vegetable oil from Colorado restaurants, a new ski shuttle service is now offering “carbon-neutral” luxury shuttle service from Denver International Airport to Colorado ski resorts like Vail, Aspen, and Breckenridge.

Last month, Denver waiter-turned-entrepreneur Kristopher Klain started offering a more eco-friendly airport shuttle alternative in Colorado Green Shuttle’s flagship seven-passenger retro-fitted Ford Excursion, fueled by 100% straight vegetable oil.

Straight vegetable oil or SVO is basically just used oil from a restaurant deep fat fryer that’s been filtered. But as readers of Gas 2.0 know all too well, all grease is not created equal. And that’s where Klain’s friends in the restaurant business come in handy. Klain gets his used oil through his restaurant connections and filters it himself.

Other than the time spent collecting and producing his veggie oil, Klain says he doesn’t have any fuel costs for his shuttle.

“It’s really the only way I could think of to truly keep Colorado green,” says Klain. “The environmental cost of a standard shuttle trip to the mountains is simply too steep, so I decided to create a low-impact alternative. It’s a way for eco-minded travelers to get up to the mountains and leave the smallest footprint possible.”

At $400 for a one way trip for seven passengers from Denver to Vail, the veggie oil-powered, two and a half hour-long trip is actually cheaper than most shuttle services to the mountains.
