Acura Returns to Endurance Racing (w/ Video)
Despite a number of successes in sportscar racing, Acura has spent the last few years sitting on the sidelines watching other carmakers soak up the glory at Sebring, Laguna Seca, and- of course- Daytona. Not any more. Meet the Penske Racing Acura ARX-05.
The ARX-05 is based on an Oreca 07 chassis and is powered by a 600 HP, turbocharged version of Honda’s AR35TT production V6. That’s the same AR35TT that’s made appearances in race-winning cars tracks like the aforementioned Sebring and Daytona, but also- critically- at the 24 Hours of LeMans and the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
That last bit is key, here, because Penske Racing might- just might- be considering a trip to LeMans with one of its Acura ARX-05s. And I say that because of who they’ve announced as their star driver: Juan Pablo Montoya.
Montoya has won the two most difficult legs of racing’s prestigious “Triple Crown” already, having won both the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix. The 24 Hours of LeMans is the third leg. Needless to day, a win there would be a tremendous swan song for one of the greatest drivers of his generation, and would cement his name in the annals of racing history forever.
We only have a few static images and the reveal video, above, at the moment- but we’ll all get to see the Acura ARX-05 in action soon enough, at the 24 Hours of Daytona this winter. Until then, feel free to speculate on Montoya’s Triple Crown chances in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!
