At about 8.4 miles/13.6 km in length, the 24 Hours of Le Mans asks man and machine to navigate a long and twisty course at triple digit speeds, allowing the course to be completed in less than 4 minutes. It can be hard to fathom just how fast and hard these cars are racing, unless you’re in the driver’s seat. Sit down and strap in, because this video will leave you breathless.
It takes just 3 minutes and 50 seconds for the 919 Hybrid to complete a full lap, diving into corners at full speed before slamming on the brakes at the last possible moment. The sound of the LMP1 race car is a wonderful juxtaposition of classic engine roar meeting the whirr of a powerful regenerative braking and hybrid boost system.
The 919 sails past the much slower GTE cars almost as though they were standing still, owning every inch of road in a lap that, while fast, wasn’t even a record. It is possibly the most pure, uninhibited racing machine on the planet, able to accelerate, stop, and turn seemingly at will.
No wonder Porsche was able to unseat the long-dominant Audi team and take the 24 Hours of Le Mans win.
