Ford GT Returning to Le Mans in 2016
Few motorsports stories are recalled as frequently or as fondly as the vengeful Ford GT40 racing program, which won the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans with a dominating 1-2-3 finish over Ferrari and the rest of the field. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of that legendary victory, and to celebrate the Ford GT will return to Le Mans in 2016 to try and depose another racing Goliath.
Ford Racing partnered with Chip Ganassi Racing to put together this new motorsports program, which will take part in both the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship and the United SportsCar Championship. The Blue Oval is keeping technical details close to its chest, saying only that the 3.5 liter EcoBoost that powers the street-going version of the 2016 Ford GT will be tuned for racing.
On the street, the EcoBoost motor is rated at 600 horsepower, but out on the race track I wouldn’t be surprised to see figures closer to a 1,000 ponies. With a carbon fiber body and the latest and greatest racing technology that Ford’s deep pockets can buy, it looks like the Blue Oval is ready to remind the world of what happens when it takes racing seriously.
