IndyCar 2014: Pocono 500 Results – Qualifying

Juan Pablo Montoya - Pocono

The last driver to go out in the qualifying session, Gas 2 favorite Juan Pablo Montoya rolled his Chevy-powered Penske-Dallara office chair out onto the 2.5 mile long “tricky triangle” and got to work. Fueled by a high-octane blend of Sunoco E85, Montoya broke the one-lap and two-lap track record on the way to the Pocono 500 pole! It’s the 15th P1 start of JPM’s IndyCar career and the first since his return to the sport after more than a decade away.

Hot damn, what a run!

Montoya recorded a first lap of 223.920 MPH and a two-lap average of 223.871 MPH on the 2.5-mile tri-oval, breaking the records set by 221.273 MPH record Marco Andretti during IndyCar’s run at the Pocono Raceway last year.

Despite Motoya’s performance, however. Sunday’s the day that counts, and Montoya will start tomorrow’s Pocono 500 just a few feet ahead of Will Power, who’s been strong all season, and within striking distance of previous Pocono lap record-holder Marco Andretti – and the Andretti legend goes way, way back at Pocono.

LIKE, WAY BACK

You can see how the day played out for the rest of the IndyCar field in the handy-dandy qualifying chart, below, and look for both Josef Newgarden and Jack Hawksworth to charge through the field – they’re both way too good to stay at the back of the pack for long.

The 2014 running of the IndyCar Pocono 500 will be broadcast live on NBC Sports, tomorrow, at Noon EST. It’s gonna be a good one!
