Monday Warm-Up: Tesla Model S VS. Lamborghini Gallardo

We’ve seen the Tesla Model S take on some pretty hot supercars before, but can Elon Musk’s electric car handle a raging Italian bull? If you’ve ever wanted to see a Tesla race a Lamborghini, this is the video for you.

This isn’t just any Lamborghini either, but a Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale. What the hell is that? Glad you asked! It’s a lighter, more powerful, and of course more expensive version of the Gallardo Superleggera. Coming in at 2,954 pounds, it’s 66 pounds lighter than the Superleggera and also has race-bred features like an adjustable spoiler and the carbon-ceramic brake pads.

With 562 ponies on tap it’s not only more powerful than the Tesla Model S, abut weighs about 1,500 pounds less too. While the Model S can handle cars like the Dodge Viper and Chevy Corvette, Italy’s best still seems to be beyond its grasp.

In other words, the ending of this race was a forgone conclusion, and though the Tesla Model S P85 manages to get a jump on the Italian, in the end the Lamborghini walks away like the electric car is standing still. That just means there’s plenty of room for improvement on Tesla’s end.

Hmmm. No gears to change on the Tesla.

The drop relative acceleration drop off to the Lambo suggests a torque drop as the revs/speed increases.

Unless the lambo was traction limited there, it suggests a torque limitation on the Tesla – add a couple of cogs to the thing to keep the motor in the lower rev range and then see how it gets on..
