The Tesla Patent Wall: Before And After

It’s been a little over a week since Elon Musk opened Tesla’s patents to the world’s automakers, a maneuver that could change the face of the auto industry. With nearly 250 patents relating to its electric car technology, automakers like BMW and Nissan are already rushing into talks about sharing Supercharger and battery technology.

The decision to release Tesla’s patents also brought a big change to the Tesla headquarters, where the patent wall was replaced with this modified meme made by Jalopnik’s Jason Torchinsky. It’s yet another nod to nerd culture and the “All Your Base Are Belong To Us” meme from the earliest days of the Internet, and it’s done nothing bring more fans to Tesla’s side.

The impact of Tesla’s patent decision won’t be felt for some time, but Elon Musk has made it clear that his ultimate goal is to accelerate the adoption electric vehicles…and he’s doing it the coolest way possible. Not many CEOs would make a game-changing announcement using a meme older than many high school students, but that’s just how Elon rolls.
