IndyCar 2014: Indy 500 Pole Day Results

2014 Indy500 Pole Day

Ed Carpenter put in a tremendous performance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Indy 500 Pole Day earlier today, putting in a four-lap average of 231.067 MPH on his way to becoming the first driver in nearly 20 years to earn back-to-back Indy 500 pole positions!

Carpenter is only the 10th driver in the race’s 100+ year history to earn back-to-back poles, but he’s not letting the semi-historic run go to his head. “It was a harder run than last year. It’s awesome to do this two years in a row – I was surprised last year and didn’t expect to do it this year with such deep competition. Now it’s all about the race, and we want to close the deal.” Carpenter also earned the Verizon P1 Award last May with a four-lap average speed of 228.762 MPH in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet with a top speed of 229.347 MPH on the first lap of the run.

Further back, Juan Pablo Montoya was second fastest with a very racy 231.007 MPH run, and ended up the best of the rest in grid spots 10-33, starting in spot 10. Marco Andretti will be one to watch, as well, after he put in a blistering 232.239 MPH, below, run in yesterday’s practice session (which you could have watched on the IndyCar Live Stream).

Here’s how the rest of the grid will line up for next weekend, and the 2014 running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, the Indianapolis 500.
