IMSA 2014: Laguna Seca Race Results

Laguna Seca IMSA race results

After coming oh-so-close to victory at Sebring and running strong everywhere else, Honda has finally made good on its motorsports promise when Ed Brown and Johannes van Overbeek drove their HPD ARX-03b prototype to a strong win against the more powerful DP cars at the legendary Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca.

Starting driver Brown ran a clean opening stint, pitting from fourth place to hand the car over to van Overbeek for the remainder of the two-hour contest. Turning the fastest laps of the race, van Overbeek enjoyed a clear track during his first stint, emerging in third place after his final scheduled pit stop on Lap 49. Passing the Action Express Corvette DP of the Daytona 24-hour winning Joao Barbosa on Lap 58, van Overbeek then began to chase the Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP of race leader Jordan Taylor.

Further back in the field, the innovative DeltaWing racer driven by Andy Meyrick and Katherine Legge struggled to finish 21 laps behind the leaders. That was a bit of a disappointment, but the team was able to put down a series of laps in the 1:20 range, less than a second off the pace of the top 5 finishers and significantly quicker than the highly-touted Mazda diesels. The prototypes may have had a horsepower edge on the DeltaWing, but Laguna Seca is no drag strip, and the more efficient DeltaWing concept proved its worth yet again, I think.

Here’s how the race played out for everyone else …
