Remember that four-cylinder diesel engine Cummins was rumored to be making? It turned up under the hood of the Nissan Frontier Diesel Runner Concept. While not planned for production, if fans like it enough, it might just make it to dealerships.
Gone is the 4.0 liter V6 engine, as engineers shoved a 2.8 liter, four-cylinder Cummins diesel under the hood of this Frontier, and they backed it up with an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF. Nissan claims the Cummins engine is good for nearly 200 horsepower and more than 350 ft-lbs of torque, right on par with the upcoming 2015 Chevy Colorado diesel. More importantly, fuel economy is supposedly 25% better than the gas-fed V6, meaning around 30 MPG on the highway for this mid-size pickup.
On the outside, Nissan gussied up the Frontier Diesel with a transparent hood to show off the Cummins engine, as well as a sharp two-tone paint job. Though not yet planned for production, if fan reaction is strong enough, the Nissan Frontier Diesel could become more than just a concept, joining its bigger brother the Nissan Titan Diesel at dealerships.
The Nissan Frontier Diesel Runner gets two thumbs way up from us.
