Acura NSX Gets Two Turbos, Three Electric Motors

Though the suits have repeatedly said that the all-new Acura NSX would get a hybrid drivetrain mounted to a mid-mounted V6 engine, details on the drivetrain were notably scarce. But with its Tokyo Auto Show debut finally here, Acura has finally divulged the delicious details, and our favorite hybrid concept car just got that much better.

The unique hybrid drivetrain setup will use a twin-turbo V6 engine of as-yet-undetermined displacement mated to a trio of electric motors and a dual-clutch transmission. Power numbers haven’t been released, but Honda’s other performance hybrid, the Acura RL SH-AWD, makes 377 horsepower with a 3.5 liter naturally-aspirated V6 and just two electric motors. In the car, it’ll get laid out like this:

With numbers like that, I am hoping that the new Acura NSX is able to deliver north of 450 horsepower when all is said and done, and the drivetrain is going to be unique to the NSX. It’s also another step towards the forced induction future that Honda sees. The Japanese automaker announced three new turbocharged VTEC engines yesterday, and this new turbocharged V6 slots in well as a V8 replacement.

Unfortunately, the Acura NSX still isn’t expected to make its sales debut before 2015, despite making its track debut and Acura having picked out a production location. That means we’re  left with at least another year and change to pine over this incredible Acura hybrid supercar.
