Owner Of Tesla That Caught Fire In Tennessee Speaks Up

third-tesla-fireWith the third battery fire in six weeks making front page news in the world of green automobiles, Tesla Motors has some ‘splainin to do. But the owner of the BBQed Tennessee Tesla Model S thinks the only explanation required is what happened that day, and why the Model S deserves praise, rather than criticism.

Dr. Juris Shibayama is the owner of the third fried Tesla, and in a piece posted to the official Tesla blog he explains how his Model S more likely than not saved his life. After driving over a large tow hitch at 70 mph (and leaving a large gash in the tarmac), the Model S continued to drive on a controlled fashion and gave the doctor more than a minute to pull over, remove his personal effects from the car, and get a safe distance away.

Incredibly, the doctor was even able to open the cars doors, even while the vehicle’s front end was engulf in flames, in order to give firefighters access to the cabin. He join the owners of both previously-burned Teslas in saying that he will buy another one. But I think Dr. Shibayama’s last two lines really sum up the whole experience perfectly.

“This experience does not in any way make me think that the Tesla Model S is an unsafe car. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.”

Indeed.
